Discover the delightful flavors of Brazilian cuisine with Pastels, a crispy and savory pastry filled with a variety of ingredients. Perfect as a snack, appetizer, or street food favorite, Pastels offer a satisfying crunch and rich fillings that can be customized to your taste.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1/2 cup warm water
  • 1 egg (for egg wash)
  • Vegetable oil, for frying
  • Filling options (choose your favorites):
    • Ground beef, cooked and seasoned
    • Shredded chicken with herbs and spices
    • Cheese (mozzarella or cheddar)
    • Heart of palm, olives, or vegetables

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Dough

In a large bowl, combine the flour and salt. Add the vegetable oil and gradually mix in the warm water until a smooth dough forms. Knead on a lightly floured surface for about 5 minutes until elastic. Cover with a clean towel and let it rest for 20–30 minutes.

  2. Prepare the Fillings

While the dough rests, prepare your chosen fillings. Ensure all fillings are cooked, seasoned, and cooled slightly to prevent the dough from getting soggy.

  3. Assemble the Pastels

Roll out the dough into thin sheets on a floured surface. Cut the dough into rectangles or circles, about 4–6 inches in size. Place a spoonful of filling in the center of each piece of dough. Fold the dough over the filling and press the edges firmly to seal. Use a fork to crimp the edges. Brush the top with beaten egg for a golden finish.

  4. Fry the Pastels

Heat vegetable oil in a deep pan or fryer to 350°F (175°C). Fry the pastels in batches until golden and crispy, about 2–4 minutes per side. Remove and drain on paper towels.

  5. Serve

Serve pastels hot, accompanied by hot sauce, chimichurri, or a squeeze of lime.

Serving

Pastels are ideal for parties, snacks, or casual gatherings. Pair them with fresh salads, cold drinks, or enjoy them on the go for a true taste of Brazilian street food.
