Algeria Travel Notes

Tipping

Tipping is appreciated in Algeria but is not always expected. In restaurants, around 5–10% is common if a service charge is not included. Small tips are also appreciated by hotel staff, drivers, and guides.

Sockets and voltage

Algeria uses plug types C and F (European standard). The standard voltage is 230 V with a frequency of 50 Hz.

Drinking water

Tap water quality varies and is generally not recommended for visitors. Bottled or filtered water is advised for drinking.

Safety

Algeria has varying safety conditions depending on the region. Major urban areas such as Algiers are generally more stable, but travellers should stay informed about local security conditions and avoid restricted border regions.

Body language

Handshakes are common greetings. Respectful and polite behaviour is important, especially in formal and family settings. Use the right hand when giving or receiving items.

Business hours

Offices typically operate Sunday to Thursday, from around 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, often with a midday break.

Languages

The official languages are Arabic and Tamazight (Berber). French is also widely used in business, education, and daily communication.
