Malaysia Travel Notes

Tipping

Tipping is not mandatory in Malaysia, as many restaurants and hotels include a service charge (usually around 10%). However, small tips for good service are appreciated.

Sockets and voltage

Malaysia uses plug type G (British standard). The standard voltage is 240 V with a frequency of 50 Hz.

Drinking water

Tap water is generally safe in major cities but is usually not recommended for direct drinking. Bottled or filtered water is widely used, especially for drinking and brushing teeth.

Safety

Malaysia is generally safe for travellers. Petty crime such as pickpocketing can occur in busy areas, especially in cities like Kuala Lumpur. Use standard precautions, avoid poorly lit areas at night, and keep valuables secure.

Body language

Handshakes are common, though in more traditional settings a slight nod or placing a hand over the heart may be used. Use the right hand when giving or receiving items. Public displays of affection are best kept minimal.

Business hours

Offices typically operate Monday to Friday, from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Shops and malls often open daily, including weekends, usually from 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM.

Languages

The official language is Malay (Bahasa Malaysia). English is widely spoken, especially in cities and tourist areas. Chinese dialects and Tamil are also commonly used within different communities.

Cultural insights

  • Multicultural society

Malaysia is a mix of Malay, Chinese, and Indian cultures, each with its own traditions.

  • Dress modestly

Lightweight clothing is suitable, but modest dress is recommended in religious sites.

  • Religious diversity

Islam is the official religion, but other religions are widely practiced — respect all customs.

  • Food culture

Street food and local cuisine are a central part of daily life and travel experience.
