Rwanda Travel Notes

Tipping

Tipping is appreciated in Rwanda but not mandatory. In restaurants, leaving around 5–10% of the bill is common if a service charge is not included. Safari guides, drivers, and hotel staff are also typically given small tips.

Sockets and voltage

Rwanda uses plug types C and J. The standard voltage is 230 V with a frequency of 50 Hz, so travelers may need a plug adapter.

Drinking water

Tap water is generally not recommended for drinking. Visitors should use bottled or properly filtered water, which is widely available in cities and tourist areas.

Safety

Rwanda is considered one of the safest countries in Africa with low crime rates, especially in the capital, Kigali. However, visitors should still follow basic safety precautions and stay aware of their surroundings.

Body language

Handshakes are common greetings. Using the right hand when giving or receiving items is considered polite. Respectful and calm communication is valued.

Business hours

Offices typically operate Monday to Friday from about 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Some businesses also open on Saturdays, while Sundays are usually quieter.

Languages

Rwanda has three official languages: Kinyarwanda, French, and English. Swahili is also widely used in trade and regional communication.
