Micronesia Travel Notes

Micronesia Travel Notes

Tipping

Tipping is not customary in Micronesia and is generally not expected. Service charges are uncommon, but small tips may be appreciated in hotels or for exceptional service.

Sockets and voltage

Micronesia primarily uses plug types A and B (US standard). The voltage is 120 V with a frequency of 60 Hz. Travellers from other regions may need both a plug adapter and a voltage converter.

Drinking water

Tap water is not always safe to drink. It is recommended to use bottled or properly filtered water, especially for drinking and brushing teeth.

Safety

Micronesia is generally safe with low levels of crime. However, infrastructure and medical facilities can be limited, particularly on outer islands. Travellers should take standard precautions and ensure they have adequate travel insurance.

Body language

Social interactions are relaxed and respectful. Handshakes are common, and politeness is valued. Modest and friendly behaviour is appreciated in both urban and rural communities.

Business hours

Government offices and businesses typically operate Monday to Friday, from around 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Services may be limited on weekends.

Languages

The Federated States of Micronesia has multiple official languages, including English, which is widely used in government and education. Indigenous languages such as Chuukese, Pohnpeian, Yapese, and Kosraean are commonly spoken across the islands.

Cultural insights
