Malawi Travel Notes

Tipping

Tipping is appreciated in Malawi. In restaurants, around 5–10% is customary if a service charge is not included. It is also common to tip hotel staff, drivers, and safari guides.

Sockets and voltage

Malawi uses plug types G (British standard). The standard voltage is 230 V with a frequency of 50 Hz.

Drinking water

Tap water is not recommended for drinking. Bottled or filtered water should be used, including for brushing teeth. Avoid ice unless you are sure it is made from purified water.

Safety

Malawi is considered one of the safer countries in the region, but petty crime such as pickpocketing can occur in urban areas, including Lilongwe and Blantyre. Avoid walking alone at night and keep valuables secure.

Body language

Greetings are important and usually involve a handshake. It is polite to greet people before starting a conversation. Respectful and friendly behaviour is highly valued.

Business hours

Offices typically operate Monday to Friday, from around 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Some shops may open on Saturdays, while Sundays are generally quieter.

Languages

The official language is English. Chichewa (Chewa) is the national language and is widely spoken across the country, along with other local languages.
