Maldives Travel Notes

Tipping

Tipping is not mandatory but widely appreciated. Many resorts include a service charge (typically around 10%), but additional tips for staff, such as housekeeping, waiters, and guides, are common.

Sockets and voltage

The Maldives uses plug types D and G. The standard voltage is 230 V with a frequency of 50 Hz. A universal adapter is recommended.

Drinking water

Tap water is not safe to drink on most islands. Bottled or desalinated water is provided by resorts and should be used for drinking and brushing teeth.

Safety

The Maldives is considered a safe destination, especially on resort islands. However, petty crime can occur in the capital, Malé. Visitors should follow local laws and resort guidelines, and avoid restricted areas.

Body language

Public displays of affection are discouraged, especially outside resort islands. Dress modestly when visiting local islands — covering shoulders and knees is expected. Respectful and calm behaviour is appreciated.

Business hours

Government offices typically operate Sunday to Thursday, from around 8:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Shops and businesses in tourist areas may have extended hours, including weekends.

Languages

The official language is Dhivehi. English is widely spoken in tourism, business, and resorts.

Cultural insights

  • Islamic culture

The Maldives is a Muslim country, and religious customs should be respected, especially on local islands.

  • Resort vs local islands

Resort islands are more relaxed, while local islands follow stricter cultural norms.

  • Dress code

Swimwear is acceptable on resort beaches, but not in public areas on local islands.

  • Environmental awareness

Marine life and coral reefs are protected — responsible tourism is strongly encouraged.
