Tipping
Tipping is not mandatory in Yemen, but it is appreciated. In restaurants and cafés, 5–10% is customary if a service charge is not included. Small tips for hotel staff, guides, and drivers are also common.
Sockets and voltage
Yemen uses plug types A, C, D, G, and sometimes F. The standard voltage is 230 V with a frequency of 50 Hz. Visitors should bring universal plug adapters.
Drinking water
Tap water is not safe to drink. Bottled or boiled water is recommended, even for brushing teeth. Ice in drinks may also be made from tap water, so it is best to check before consuming.
Safety
Yemen is considered a high-risk country for travel due to ongoing conflict, political instability, and security concerns. Travel is strongly discouraged in most regions. If travel is unavoidable, stay informed through official advisories, avoid public gatherings, and do not travel without security arrangements.
Body language
Public displays of affection are not acceptable. Showing the soles of your feet is considered offensive. Avoid prolonged eye contact with people of the opposite gender. Greetings are usually formal and may include handshakes or placing the right hand over the heart.
Business hours
The workweek generally runs from Saturday to Wednesday or Thursday, with Friday as the main weekly holiday. Business hours vary, and many offices close for afternoon prayers.
Languages
Arabic is the official language and is used in government, media, and education. Some local dialects and minority languages are spoken in different regions. English is limited and mainly understood in business or tourist contexts.
