Tipping

Tipping is not mandatory but appreciated in Gabon. In restaurants, around 5–10% is common if a service charge is not included. Small tips are also given to hotel staff, drivers, and guides.

Sockets and voltage

Gabon uses plug types C and E. The standard voltage is 220 V with a frequency of 50 Hz.

Drinking water

Tap water is not recommended for drinking. Bottled or filtered water should be used for drinking and brushing teeth.

Safety

Gabon is generally stable, but petty crime such as pickpocketing can occur, especially in urban areas like Libreville. Travellers should take standard precautions and avoid isolated areas at night.

Body language

Handshakes are common greetings. Politeness and respect are important, and it is customary to greet people before starting a conversation.

Business hours

Offices typically operate Monday to Friday, from around 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Some businesses may open on Saturdays; Sundays are usually quieter.

Languages

The official language is French. Several local languages are also spoken, including Fang, Myene, and Nzebi.
