Italy Travel Notes

Tipping

Tipping is appreciated but not mandatory in Italy. A service charge (“coperto”) is often included in restaurant bills. Leaving small change or rounding up the bill is common; around 5–10% is sufficient for good service.

Sockets and voltage

Italy uses plug types C, F, and L. The standard voltage is 230 V with a frequency of 50 Hz.

Drinking water

Tap water is safe to drink throughout the country. Public drinking fountains are common in cities like Rome.

Safety

Italy is generally safe for travellers. Petty crime such as pickpocketing can occur in busy tourist areas, especially in Rome, Florence, and Venice. Stay alert in crowded places and on public transport.

Body language

Italians use expressive gestures in communication. Handshakes are common greetings, and eye contact is expected. Friendly and animated conversation is normal.

Business hours

Offices typically operate Monday to Friday, from around 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Many shops close for a midday break (siesta) and reopen in the afternoon. Sundays are often quieter.

Languages

The official language is Italian. Regional languages and dialects are also spoken. English is widely understood in tourist areas but may be limited in smaller towns.
