Suriname Travel Notes

Suriname Travel Notes

Tipping

Tipping is appreciated in Suriname but not mandatory. In restaurants and cafés, leaving around 5–10% of the bill is customary if a service charge is not included. Small tips are also common for hotel staff, taxi drivers, and tour guides.

Sockets and voltage

Suriname uses plug types C and F (European standard). The standard voltage is 127/220 V with a frequency of 60 Hz, so travelers may need a voltage converter or adapter depending on the device.

Drinking water

Tap water is generally not recommended for drinking. Visitors should use bottled or properly filtered water, which is widely available in cities and tourist areas.

Safety

Suriname is considered relatively safe for travelers, particularly in urban centers and tourist areas. However, petty theft can occur, especially in crowded markets or on public transport. Travelers should remain vigilant and keep valuables secure.

Body language

Handshakes are common for greetings. Polite and friendly behavior is appreciated, and respecting personal space is expected in formal settings.

Business hours

Offices and government institutions typically operate Monday to Friday from about 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Shops and restaurants often open on weekends, though hours may vary.

Languages

The official language is Dutch. Other widely spoken languages include Sranan Tongo, Hindi, Javanese, and various indigenous languages. English is also understood in tourist areas.
