Kazakhstan Travel Notes

Tipping

Tipping is not mandatory but appreciated. In restaurants, around 5–10% is common if a service charge is not included. Small tips are also given to hotel staff, drivers, and guides.

Sockets and voltage

Kazakhstan uses plug types C and F (European standard). The standard voltage is 220 V with a frequency of 50 Hz.

Drinking water

Tap water is generally not recommended for drinking in many areas. Bottled or filtered water is preferred, especially for visitors.

Safety

Kazakhstan is generally safe for travellers. Petty crime such as pickpocketing can occur in busy urban areas, especially in Almaty and Astana. Standard precautions are advised.

Body language

Handshakes are common greetings. It is polite to greet people before starting conversations. Respectful behaviour and calm communication are valued.

Business hours

Offices typically operate Monday to Friday, from around 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Shops may open on Saturdays, while Sundays are usually quieter.

Languages

The official languages are Kazakh and Russian. Russian is widely used in business and urban life, while Kazakh is the state language and increasingly used in public life.
