Tipping

Tipping is customary in Chile. In restaurants, around 10% is standard and is often suggested on the bill (“propina”). It is also common to tip hotel staff, drivers, and guides.

Chile uses plug types C and L. The standard voltage is 220 V with a frequency of 50 Hz.

Drinking water

Tap water is generally safe to drink in most urban areas, including Santiago, though some travellers may prefer bottled water due to taste.

Chile is considered one of the safer countries in South America. However, petty crime such as pickpocketing can occur, especially in urban areas and public transport. Standard precautions are recommended.

Handshakes are common greetings. Friendly and polite communication is typical, and it is customary to greet people before starting a conversation.

Offices typically operate Monday to Friday, from around 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Shops and malls often open daily, including weekends.

Languages

The official language is Spanish. English is spoken in tourist areas but is less common elsewhere.
