Pompoen Gritibana Recipe

Pompoen Gritibana Soep (Surinamese Pumpkin Soup)

Pompoen Gritibana Soep is a beloved Surinamese dish, especially enjoyed during cooler months or festive occasions. This hearty soup combines the natural sweetness of pumpkin with a medley of spices, creating a flavorful and satisfying meal. The addition of plantain dumplings, known as 'gritibana', adds a unique texture and depth to the soup.

Ingredients

For the Soup:
  • 1 medium pumpkin (about 1.5 kg), peeled, seeded, and cubed
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon ground coriander
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground turmeric
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1.5 liters (6 cups) vegetable broth
  • Salt and pepper to taste
For the Gritibana (Plantain Dumplings):
  • 2 ripe plantains, peeled and grated
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • Water, as needed

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Soup Base

In a large pot, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté until translucent, about 5 minutes. Add the minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant. Stir in the ground cumin, coriander, turmeric, and nutmeg, cooking for 1–2 minutes to toast the spices. Add the cubed pumpkin to the pot, stirring to coat with the spices. Pour in the vegetable broth, bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 20–25 minutes, or until the pumpkin is tender.

  2. Make the Gritibana Dumplings

In a bowl, combine the grated plantains, flour, and salt. Gradually add water to form a thick, sticky dough. Bring a separate pot of water to a boil. Using your hands, shape the plantain mixture into small balls and drop them into the boiling water. Cook the dumplings for 5–7 minutes, or until they float to the surface. Remove with a slotted spoon and set aside.

  3. Serve

Once the pumpkin is tender, use an immersion blender to puree the soup until smooth. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Ladle the soup into bowls, adding a few gritibana dumplings to each. Serve hot, garnished with fresh herbs if desired.

Serving

Pompoen Gritibana Soep is traditionally enjoyed with a side of rice or bread. The rich, spiced flavors of the soup pair wonderfully with a simple green salad or pickled vegetables. For a complete Surinamese meal, consider serving it alongside dishes like saoto (chicken soup) or pindasoep (peanut soup). This dish not only offers a taste of Surinamese cuisine but also provides a comforting and nutritious meal. Its blend of spices and textures makes it a delightful addition to any culinary repertoire.
