Discover the fresh and vibrant flavors of Polynesia with Ota Ika, a traditional Tongan dish that highlights the natural taste of raw fish marinated in citrus and coconut milk. Perfect as a light appetizer or a refreshing main course, Ota Ika brings a tropical touch to your dining table.
Ingredients
- 1 lb (450 g) fresh firm white fish (like tuna or snapper), diced into 1/2-inch cubes
- 1 cup fresh coconut milk
- 1/4 cup fresh lime juice
- 1 small red onion, finely sliced
- 1 medium tomato, diced
- 1 cucumber, peeled, seeded, and diced
- 1 small chili, finely chopped (optional, adjust to taste)
- Salt to taste
- Freshly ground black pepper, to taste
- 2 tablespoons fresh cilantro or parsley, chopped
Instructions
-
Prepare the Fish
Place the diced fish in a mixing bowl. Pour over the lime juice, ensuring the fish is well coated. Let it marinate in the refrigerator for 15–20 minutes. The citrus will slightly “cook” the fish, giving it a delicate texture.
-
Mix the Vegetables
In a separate bowl, combine the red onion, tomato, cucumber, and chili. Toss gently to mix the flavors.
-
Combine with Coconut Milk
Add the marinated fish to the vegetables. Pour the coconut milk over the mixture and stir gently to combine. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
-
Chill and Serve
Cover the salad and refrigerate for another 10–15 minutes to let the flavors meld. Garnish with chopped cilantro or parsley before serving.
Serving
Serve Ota Ika chilled as an appetizer or alongside steamed rice for a light main course. Its refreshing citrus and coconut flavors make it a perfect dish for warm-weather dining or tropical-themed meals.
