Ingredients
- 1 pound beef or corned beef, finely chopped
- 1 large onion, finely chopped
- 1 can (13.5 oz) coconut cream
- 12–15 taro leaves, washed and tough stems removed
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon chili flakes (optional)
Instructions
-
Prepare the Filling
In a bowl, combine the chopped beef or corned beef with the finely chopped onion. Add salt, pepper, and chili flakes (if using). Mix well. Gradually stir in the coconut cream until the mixture is well coated.
-
Assemble the Lu Pulu
Lay out the taro leaves flat, removing any tough stems. Place 2–3 tablespoons of the beef and coconut mixture onto each leaf. Fold the sides over the filling and roll the leaf tightly to form a parcel. Secure with kitchen twine if needed.
-
Bake the Lu Pulu
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Place the parcels in a baking dish and pour any remaining coconut cream over the top. Cover the dish with foil and bake for 1–1.5 hours, until the leaves are tender and the filling is heated through.
-
Serve
Remove the parcels from the oven and let cool slightly before serving. Serve hot with steamed rice or breadfruit for a traditional Samoan meal.
