Oman Travel Notes

Tipping

Tipping is not mandatory in Oman but is appreciated. In restaurants, leaving around 5–10% is common if a service charge is not included. Small tips are also given to hotel staff, drivers, and guides.

Sockets and voltage

Oman uses plug type G (British standard). The standard voltage is 240 V with a frequency of 50 Hz, so travelers may need a plug adapter.

Drinking water

Tap water is generally safe but not commonly used for drinking. Most residents and visitors prefer bottled or filtered water.

Safety

Oman is considered one of the safest countries in the Middle East, with low crime rates. Visitors should still respect local laws and customs.

Body language

Handshakes are common between men. Physical contact between unrelated men and women in public should be avoided. Using the right hand when giving or receiving items is considered polite.

Business hours

Offices typically operate Sunday to Thursday from about 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Businesses may close briefly during prayer times. Friday is the main day of rest.

Languages

Arabic is the official language of Oman. English is widely used in business, tourism, and everyday communication.
