Nicaragua Travel Notes

Tipping

Tipping is customary in Nicaragua. In restaurants and cafés, a 10% service charge is often included, but leaving a small additional tip for good service is appreciated. Hotel staff, drivers, and tour guides are also commonly tipped.

Sockets and voltage

Nicaragua uses plug types A and B (same as the United States). The standard voltage is 120 V with a frequency of 60 Hz, so travelers from regions using 220–240 V may need a voltage converter.

Drinking water

Tap water is generally not recommended for drinking. Visitors should use bottled or properly filtered water, which is widely available.

Safety

Nicaragua is generally safe for travelers, especially in tourist areas. However, petty crime such as pickpocketing can occur, particularly in cities and crowded places. Visitors should keep valuables secure and remain aware of their surroundings.

Body language

Handshakes are common greetings. Friends and acquaintances may greet with a light hug or cheek kiss. Friendly and polite communication is typical.

Business hours

Offices typically operate Monday to Friday from about 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, often with a midday break. Some businesses also open on Saturdays.

Languages

The official language is Spanish. English is spoken in some tourist areas, particularly along the Caribbean coast. Indigenous and creole languages are also used in certain regions.
