Ethiopia Travel Notes

Tipping

Tipping is appreciated but not mandatory in Ethiopia. In restaurants, around 5–10% is common if a service charge is not included. Small tips are also given to hotel staff, drivers, and guides.

Sockets and voltage

Ethiopia uses plug types C, E, F, and L. The standard voltage is 220 V with a frequency of 50 Hz.

Drinking water

Tap water is not safe to drink. Bottled or filtered water should be used for drinking and brushing teeth. Avoid ice unless it is confirmed to be made from purified water.

Safety

Ethiopia has mixed safety conditions, with some regions experiencing instability. Travellers should stay informed, avoid restricted areas, and follow official advice. In the capital, Addis Ababa, standard urban precautions apply.

Body language

Handshakes are common greetings. Respectful behaviour is important, especially toward elders. Direct eye contact is generally acceptable but should be balanced with politeness.

Business hours

Offices typically operate Monday to Friday, from around 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Some businesses may open on Saturdays.

Languages

Ethiopia has two main federal working languages: Amharic and English. Additionally, many regional languages are widely spoken, including Oromo and Tigrinya.
