Tipping

Tipping is customary in Moldova. In restaurants, around 5–10% is typical if a service charge is not included. It is also common to tip hotel staff, taxi drivers, and guides.

Sockets and voltage

Moldova uses plug types C and F (European standard). The standard voltage is 230 V with a frequency of 50 Hz.

Drinking water

Tap water is generally safe in major cities, but bottled water is recommended, especially in rural areas or for sensitive travellers.

Safety

Moldova is considered relatively safe for travellers. Petty crime such as pickpocketing can occur in busy areas, particularly in the capital, Chișinău. Standard precautions, such as keeping valuables secure and avoiding poorly lit areas at night, are advised.

Body language

Handshakes are the most common greeting. Maintaining eye contact and using polite language is appreciated. It is customary to greet people before starting a conversation.

Business hours

Offices typically operate Monday to Friday, from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Shops may open on Saturdays, while Sundays are generally quieter.

Languages

The official language is Romanian (often locally referred to as Moldovan). Russian is also widely spoken, especially in cities and among older generations. Ukrainian and Gagauz are used in certain regions.
