Tipping

Tipping is not mandatory but appreciated in the Republic of the Congo. In restaurants, around 5–10% is common if a service charge is not included. Small tips are also given to hotel staff, drivers, and guides.

Sockets and voltage

The Republic of the Congo uses plug types C and E. The standard voltage is 230 V with a frequency of 50 Hz.

Drinking water

Tap water is not safe to drink. Bottled or filtered water should be used for drinking and brushing teeth.

The country has moderate safety risks, including petty crime and limited infrastructure. Travellers should exercise caution, especially in urban areas like Brazzaville. Avoid travelling at night and follow local advice.

Body language

Handshakes are common greetings. Polite and respectful communication is expected. It is customary to greet people before starting a conversation.

Offices typically operate Monday to Friday, from around 8:00 AM to 4:00 or 5:00 PM. Some businesses may open on Saturdays.

The official language is French. Widely spoken national languages include Lingala and Kituba, along with various local languages.
