Savor the comforting flavors of Jewish cuisine with Matzah Ball Soup, a traditional dish featuring light, fluffy matzah balls served in a rich, savory chicken broth. Perfect for holidays, family dinners, or whenever you crave a warm, nourishing meal, this soup is a timeless classic that brings both flavor and heart to the table.

Ingredients

For the Matzah Balls:
  • 1 cup matzah meal
  • 4 large eggs
  • ¼ cup vegetable oil or melted chicken fat (schmaltz)
  • ¼ cup water or chicken broth
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper
  • Optional: 1 teaspoon baking powder (for extra fluffiness)
For the Soup:
  • 6 cups chicken broth (homemade or store-bought)
  • 2 carrots, sliced
  • 2 celery stalks, sliced
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon salt, or to taste
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • Fresh dill or parsley, for garnish

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Matzah Balls

In a bowl, beat the eggs, then mix in oil (or schmaltz), water (or chicken broth), salt, and pepper. Gradually fold in the matzah meal (and baking powder if using). Mix until well combined. Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to let the mixture firm up.

  2. Form and Cook the Matzah Balls

Bring a large pot of salted water or chicken broth to a boil. With wet hands, shape the chilled matzah mixture into balls about the size of a walnut. Gently drop the matzah balls into the boiling water or broth. Reduce heat to a simmer, cover, and cook for 30–40 minutes, or until the matzah balls are fully cooked and light.

  3. Prepare the Soup

In a separate pot, bring the chicken broth to a simmer. Add carrots, celery, onion, salt, and pepper. Cook until vegetables are tender, about 15–20 minutes. Gently add the cooked matzah balls to the broth. Simmer for an additional 5 minutes to let flavors meld.

  4. Serve

Ladle the soup into bowls, making sure each serving gets a matzah ball or two. Garnish with fresh dill or parsley for a burst of flavor and color.
