Marshall Islands Travel Notes

Marshall Islands Travel Notes

Tipping

Tipping is not customary in the Marshall Islands and is generally not expected. Service charges are uncommon, but small tips may be appreciated for exceptional service.

Sockets and voltage

The Marshall Islands use plug types A and B (US standard). The standard voltage is 120 V with a frequency of 60 Hz. Travellers from other regions may need a plug adapter and possibly a voltage converter.

Drinking water

Tap water is not always safe to drink. It is recommended to use bottled or properly filtered water for drinking and brushing teeth. Fresh water resources are limited, so conservation is important.

Safety

The Marshall Islands are generally safe with low levels of crime. However, infrastructure and medical facilities are limited, especially outside the capital, Majuro. Travel insurance and basic precautions are advised.

Body language

Social interactions are informal and friendly. Handshakes are common, and politeness is appreciated. Respect for local customs and community is important.

Business hours

Government offices and businesses typically operate Monday to Friday, from around 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Services may be limited on weekends.

Languages

The official languages are Marshallese and English. English is widely used in government, education, and business, while Marshallese is the primary language in daily life.
