USA Travel Notes

Tipping

Tipping is widely expected in the United States and forms an important part of service workers’ income. In restaurants, it is customary to leave 15–20% of the bill. Bartenders usually receive about $1–2 per drink, while hotel staff, taxi drivers, and tour guides may also expect small tips.

Sockets and voltage

The United States uses plug types A and B. The standard voltage is 120 V with a frequency of 60 Hz, which is lower than in many other countries, so some travelers may need a voltage converter.

Drinking water

Tap water is generally safe to drink throughout the country and is widely available in homes, restaurants, and public places. Bottled water is also commonly sold in stores and vending machines.

Safety

The United States is generally safe for travelers, but safety conditions can vary by city and neighborhood. Petty crime such as pickpocketing or theft can occur in crowded tourist areas. Visitors should remain aware of their surroundings and follow local safety advice.

Body language

Handshakes are common when meeting someone for the first time. Americans typically value personal space during conversations. Friendly eye contact and casual conversation are common in social interactions.

Business hours

Standard office hours are usually Monday to Friday from about 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Many stores, restaurants, and shopping centers remain open in the evenings and on weekends, especially in large cities.

Languages

The United States has no official language at the federal level, but English is the most widely spoken language. Spanish is also commonly used in many regions, and numerous other languages are spoken by diverse communities across the country.
