Liberia Travel Notes

Tipping

Tipping is not mandatory but appreciated. In restaurants, around 5–10% is customary if a service charge is not included. Small tips are also common for hotel staff, drivers, and guides.

Sockets and voltage

Liberia uses plug types A and B (US standard). The standard voltage is typically 120 V, though some areas may also use 220 V. A universal adapter and voltage converter are recommended.

Drinking water

Tap water is not safe to drink. Bottled or filtered water should be used for drinking and brushing teeth. Avoid ice unless you are sure it is made from purified water.

Safety

Liberia is generally safe but has some risks, including petty crime such as pickpocketing, especially in urban areas like Monrovia. Avoid walking alone at night, keep valuables secure, and use trusted transportation.

Body language

Handshakes are common greetings, often accompanied by friendly conversation. Politeness and respect are important in social interactions.

Business hours

Offices typically operate Monday to Friday, from around 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Some businesses may open on Saturdays; Sundays are usually quieter.

Languages

The official language is English. Various indigenous languages, such as Kpelle, Bassa, and Grebo, are widely spoken across the country.
