Tipping

Tipping is customary in Barbados. In restaurants, a 10–15% service charge is often included in the bill, but additional tips for good service are appreciated. Tips are also common for hotel staff, taxi drivers, and guides.

Sockets and voltage

Barbados uses plug types A and B. The standard voltage is 115 V with a frequency of 50 Hz.

Drinking water

Tap water is generally safe to drink throughout the island and is of good quality.

Safety

Barbados is considered one of the safer Caribbean destinations. Petty crime such as theft can occur, particularly in tourist areas and beaches around Bridgetown. Standard precautions are recommended.

Body language

Handshakes are common greetings. Communication is friendly and polite, and respectful behaviour is appreciated.

Business hours

Offices typically operate Monday to Friday, from around 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM. Shops and tourist businesses often open on Saturdays and in resort areas on Sundays.

Languages

The official language is English. Bajan Creole is also widely spoken in informal settings.
