Ingredients
- 1.5 lbs beef flank steak or brisket
- 1 large onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 red bell pepper, sliced
- 2 medium tomatoes, chopped (or 1 cup tomato sauce)
- 1 tablespoon tomato paste
- 1 teaspoon ground cumin
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- Salt to taste
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 1 cup beef broth
- 1 bay leaf
- Optional: sliced olives or capers for garnish
Instructions
-
Prepare the Beef
Place the beef in a pot with enough water to cover it. Add a pinch of salt and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer until the beef is tender (about 1.5 to 2 hours). Remove the beef and let it cool slightly, then shred it into thin strips.
-
Cook the Vegetables
In a large skillet, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat. Add the onion, garlic, and red bell pepper. Sauté until softened, about 5 minutes.
-
Simmer the Beef in Sauce
Add the chopped tomatoes, tomato paste, cumin, paprika, black pepper, and shredded beef to the skillet. Stir to combine. Pour in the beef broth and add the bay leaf. Cover and simmer on low heat for 20–30 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together. Adjust seasoning with salt to taste.
-
Serve
Serve Hilachas hot, ideally over white rice, with warm tortillas, or alongside mashed potatoes. Garnish with sliced olives or capers for an extra layer of flavor.
