Yomari (Nepalese Sweet Dumplings)

Discover the unique flavors of Nepal with Yomari, a traditional sweet dumpling made during festivals and special occasions. Yomari combines a soft, steamed dough with a rich, sweet filling, creating a delightful treat that is both comforting and indulgent. Perfect for sharing or enjoying as a special dessert, Yomari brings a taste of Nepalese culture to your table.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups rice flour
  • 1/2 cup warm water
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup chaku (molasses/jaggery) or brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup grated coconut
  • 1/4 teaspoon cardamom powder
  • 1 tablespoon sesame seeds (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Dough

In a mixing bowl, combine rice flour and salt. Gradually add warm water and knead into a smooth, pliable dough. Cover and let it rest for 15–20 minutes.

  2. Make the Filling

In a separate bowl, mix chaku (or brown sugar), grated coconut, cardamom powder, and sesame seeds if using. Adjust sweetness to taste.

  3. Shape the Yomari

Take a small portion of dough (about the size of a walnut) and flatten it into a small oval or cone shape. Place a spoonful of the filling in the center of the dough. Carefully fold and pinch the edges to seal the filling inside, forming a teardrop-shaped dumpling.

  4. Steam the Dumplings

Prepare a steamer with water and bring it to a boil. Place the dumplings in the steamer and steam for 10–12 minutes, or until the dough becomes slightly translucent and cooked through.

  5. Serve

Let the Yomari cool slightly before serving. Enjoy warm as a sweet snack or dessert.

Serving

Yomari is traditionally served during festivals like Yomari Punhi in Nepal. Pair with a cup of tea or enjoy on its own to experience the rich sweetness and cultural heritage in every bite.
