Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 large potatoes, peeled and grated
- 1 large egg
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup water (adjust as needed)
- 4 cups shredded cabbage (optional, for topping)
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1/2 cup diced smoked bacon or pancetta (optional)
- 1/2 cup crumbled sheep cheese or feta (optional)
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
-
Prepare the Dough
In a large bowl, combine the grated potatoes, flour, egg, and salt.
Gradually add water, mixing until a soft, slightly sticky dough forms. Adjust the flour or water as needed to achieve the right consistency.
-
Shape and Cook the Halušky
Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil.
Using a spoon or a halušky grater, drop small portions of the dough into the boiling water.
Cook until the dumplings rise to the surface, then continue boiling for an additional 2–3 minutes.
Remove with a slotted spoon and drain well.
-
Prepare the Topping
In a skillet, cook diced bacon or pancetta until crispy. Remove and set aside, leaving the fat in the pan.
If using cabbage, sauté shredded cabbage in the same skillet until soft and lightly caramelized. Season with salt and pepper.
-
Serve
Toss the cooked halušky with the butter and, if desired, the sautéed cabbage.
Sprinkle with crumbled sheep cheese and top with crispy bacon.
Serve warm, garnished with additional cheese or fresh herbs if desired.
Serving
Halušky is best enjoyed hot as a comforting main dish or a hearty side. Pair it with a crisp salad or a light soup for a complete Slovak-inspired meal. The combination of tender dumplings, savory toppings, and rich flavors makes Halušky a timeless favorite that warms both the stomach and the heart.
