Gambia Travel Notes

Tipping

Tipping is appreciated in The Gambia. In restaurants, around 5–10% is common if a service charge is not included. Small tips are also customary for hotel staff, drivers, and guides.

Sockets and voltage

The Gambia uses plug types G (British standard). The standard voltage is 230 V with a frequency of 50 Hz.

Drinking water

Tap water is not safe to drink. Bottled or filtered water should be used for drinking and brushing teeth. Avoid ice unless it is confirmed to be made from purified water.

Safety

The Gambia is generally considered a safe destination for travellers. However, petty crime such as pickpocketing can occur, particularly in busy areas and tourist zones around Banjul and coastal resorts. Standard precautions are recommended.

Body language

Handshakes are common greetings and often accompanied by friendly conversation. Politeness and respect are important in social interactions.

Business hours

Offices typically operate Monday to Friday, from around 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Some businesses may open on Saturdays; Sundays are usually quieter.

Languages

The official language is English. Several local languages are widely spoken, including Mandinka, Wolof, and Fula.
