Experience the wholesome and comforting flavors of Egyptian cuisine with Ful Medames, a traditional dish made from slow-cooked fava beans, enriched with olive oil, lemon, and garlic. Perfect for breakfast, lunch, or a light dinner, Ful Medames is a hearty, nutritious, and flavorful dish that has been enjoyed for centuries.
Ingredients
- 2 cups dried fava beans (or 3 cups canned fava beans, drained and rinsed)
- 4 cups water (for dried beans)
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil
- Juice of 1 lemon
- 1 teaspoon ground cumin
- Salt to taste
- Optional toppings: chopped parsley, chopped tomatoes, chopped onions, hard-boiled eggs, chili flakes, tahini
Instructions
-
Prepare the Beans
If using dried fava beans, soak them overnight in water. Drain and rinse before cooking. Place the soaked beans in a large pot with 4 cups of fresh water. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer gently for 1 to 1.5 hours, or until the beans are tender. If using canned beans, skip this step.
-
Mash and Flavor
Once the beans are cooked and tender, drain most of the cooking water, leaving a small amount to achieve the desired consistency. Mash the beans lightly with a fork or potato masher. Stir in minced garlic, olive oil, lemon juice, ground cumin, and salt. Adjust seasoning to taste.
-
Serve
Spoon the Ful Medames into a serving bowl. Drizzle with extra olive oil and garnish with optional toppings like chopped parsley, tomatoes, onions, or hard-boiled eggs. Serve warm with pita bread or flatbread.
Serving
Ful Medames is often enjoyed as a breakfast dish in Egypt but works beautifully for any meal. Pair it with fresh vegetables, olives, or cheese for a complete and satisfying experience. Its rich, earthy flavors and creamy texture make it a timeless favorite.
