Flan (Spanish Custard Dessert)

Indulge in the smooth, creamy sweetness of Flan, a beloved Spanish and Latin American dessert. With its silky custard base and rich caramel topping, this classic treat offers the perfect balance of sweetness and elegance. Whether served at a festive gathering or as a comforting after-dinner dessert, Flan is sure to impress every guest at your table.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup granulated sugar (for caramel)
  • 1 can (14 oz) sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 can (12 oz) evaporated milk
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Caramel

In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the sugar until it turns a golden-brown caramel.

Quickly pour the caramel into the bottom of a round baking dish, tilting to coat the bottom evenly. Set aside to harden.

  2. Make the Custard

In a blender, combine sweetened condensed milk, evaporated milk, eggs, and vanilla extract. Blend until smooth.

Pour the custard mixture gently over the hardened caramel in the baking dish.

  3. Bake

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Place the baking dish inside a larger pan and pour hot water into the outer pan to create a water bath (bain-marie).

Bake for 50–60 minutes, or until a knife inserted in the center comes out clean.

  4. Cool and Serve

Remove from the oven and allow the flan to cool completely. Refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight.

To serve, run a knife around the edges, invert the flan onto a plate, and let the caramel sauce drizzle over the custard.

Serving

Flan is best enjoyed chilled, served with a drizzle of its own caramel sauce. Garnish with fresh berries or a sprig of mint for a refreshing touch.

Experience

This velvety dessert is a timeless favorite, blending tradition and indulgence in every spoonful. Whether shared with loved ones or savored alone, Flan brings a sweet taste of heritage to your table.
