China Travel Notes

Tipping

Tipping is not traditionally expected in China and is often not practiced in most local establishments. However, in high-end hotels, international restaurants, and for tour guides, tipping may be appreciated.

Sockets and voltage

China uses plug types A, C, and I. The standard voltage is 220 V with a frequency of 50 Hz.

Drinking water

Tap water is not safe to drink. Bottled or boiled water should be used for drinking and brushing teeth. Hot water is commonly provided in hotels.

Safety

China is generally a safe destination for travellers, with low levels of violent crime. Petty theft can occur in crowded areas, especially in major cities like Beijing and Shanghai. Standard precautions are recommended.

Body language

Handshakes are common greetings, though they may be lighter than in Western cultures. Respect, politeness, and avoiding confrontation are important in social interactions.

Business hours

Offices typically operate Monday to Friday, from around 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Shops, malls, and restaurants often open daily, including weekends, usually from around 10:00 AM to late evening.

Languages

The official language is Mandarin Chinese (Putonghua). Many regional dialects are also spoken. English is used in major cities and tourist areas but is less common elsewhere.
