Benin Travel Notes

Tipping

Tipping is appreciated in Benin but is not strictly mandatory. In restaurants, around 5–10% is common if a service charge is not included. Small tips are also given to hotel staff, drivers, and guides.

Sockets and voltage

Benin uses plug types C and E. The standard voltage is 220 V with a frequency of 50 Hz.

Drinking water

Tap water is not safe to drink. Bottled or filtered water should be used for drinking and brushing teeth.

Safety

Benin is generally considered one of the more stable countries in West Africa, though travellers should still exercise caution. Petty crime can occur in urban areas, particularly in Porto-Novo and Cotonou. Standard precautions are recommended.

Handshakes are common greetings. Respectful and polite communication is important, especially when greeting elders or entering conversations.

Business hours

Offices typically operate Monday to Friday, from around 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Some businesses may also open on Saturdays.

The official language is French. Widely spoken local languages include Fon and Yoruba, among many others.
