Bhutan Travel Notes

Tipping

Tipping is not traditionally expected in Bhutan, but it is appreciated in the tourism sector. Small tips are commonly given to guides, drivers, and hotel staff for good service.

Sockets and voltage

Bhutan uses plug types C, D, F, and G. The standard voltage is 230 V with a frequency of 50 Hz.

Drinking water

Tap water is not generally recommended for visitors. Bottled or filtered water should be used for drinking and brushing teeth.

Safety

Bhutan is considered a very safe destination for travellers, with low crime rates and a peaceful atmosphere, including in Thimphu. Standard precautions are generally sufficient.

Body language

Handshakes are common, though traditional greetings may involve a slight bow. Respectful and calm behaviour is highly valued, especially around religious sites and monks.

Business hours

Offices typically operate Monday to Friday, from around 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Shops may have varying hours depending on location and season.

Languages

The official language is Dzongkha. English is widely used in education, government, and tourism.
