Turkmenistan Travel Notes

Tipping

Tipping is not strictly required in Turkmenistan but is appreciated in tourist-oriented services. In restaurants and cafés, leaving around 5–10% for good service is common if a service charge is not included. Small tips may also be given to hotel staff, drivers, and guides.

Sockets and voltage

Turkmenistan uses plug types C and F (European standard). The standard voltage is 220 V with a frequency of 50 Hz, so most European devices will work without a converter, though travelers from other regions may need an adapter.

Drinking water

Tap water is generally not recommended for drinking. Bottled or filtered water is widely used and recommended for visitors, including for brushing teeth.

Safety

Turkmenistan is generally considered safe in terms of street crime, but the country has strict regulations and close government control. Visitors should always carry identification, follow local laws carefully, and avoid photographing government buildings, military facilities, or security personnel.

Body language

Handshakes are common when greeting someone, especially between men. It is polite to greet elders first and show respect during conversations. Using the right hand when giving or receiving items is considered good manners.

Business hours

Government offices and businesses usually operate Monday to Friday from around 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Some shops may also open on Saturdays, while Sundays are typically quieter.

Languages

The official language is Turkmen. Russian is also widely understood and used in business and urban communication. Uzbek and other minority languages are spoken in some regions.
