Tajikistan Travel Notes

Tipping

Tipping is not strictly required in Tajikistan but is appreciated for good service. In restaurants and cafés, leaving around 5–10% of the bill is common if a service charge is not included. Small tips may also be given to hotel staff, drivers, and guides.

Sockets and voltage

Tajikistan uses plug types C and F (European standard). The standard voltage is 220 V with a frequency of 50 Hz, so travelers from many regions may only need a plug adapter.

Drinking water

Tap water is generally not recommended for drinking. Visitors should use bottled or filtered water, which is widely available in cities. It is also advisable to use bottled water for brushing teeth.

Safety

Tajikistan is generally considered safe for travelers, particularly in major cities and tourist areas. However, visitors should remain cautious in remote regions and near border areas. Petty theft can occur, so keeping valuables secure is recommended.

Body language

Handshakes are common when greeting someone, especially between men. Respect for elders is important, and polite greetings are expected before starting conversations. Using the right hand when giving or receiving items is considered polite.

Business hours

Offices and government institutions usually operate Monday to Friday from about 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Markets and small shops may open earlier and stay open later.

Languages

The official language is Tajik. Russian is widely used in business, government, and urban communication. Minority languages such as Uzbek and Kyrgyz are also spoken in some regions.
