Spain Travel Notes

Tipping

Tipping in Spain is appreciated but not obligatory. In restaurants and cafés, locals often leave 5–10% for good service or simply round up the bill. Small change is commonly left in bars or cafés.

Sockets and voltage

Spain uses plug types C and F (European standard). The standard voltage is 230 V with a frequency of 50 Hz, so travelers from many regions may only need a plug adapter.

Drinking water

Tap water is generally safe to drink across Spain. However, in some areas locals prefer bottled water due to taste or mineral content.

Safety

Spain is considered a safe destination for travelers. However, pickpocketing can occur in busy tourist areas, public transport, and crowded attractions. Visitors should keep valuables secure and remain aware of their surroundings.

Body language

Handshakes are common when meeting someone for the first time. Friends and acquaintances often greet each other with two light cheek kisses. Expressive gestures and lively conversations are common in social interactions.

Business hours

Offices typically operate Monday to Friday from about 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Shops may close for a midday break in smaller towns, while large stores and shopping centers often stay open all day.

Spanish (Castilian) is the official language of Spain. Several regional languages are also recognized and widely used, including Catalan, Basque, and Galician.
