Samoa Travel Notes

Samoa Travel Notes

Tipping

Tipping is not a common practice in Samoa and is generally not expected. Exceptional service may be rewarded with a small tip, but it is not mandatory in restaurants, hotels, or taxis.

Sockets and voltage

Samoa uses plug type I (Australian/New Zealand standard). The standard voltage is 230 V with a frequency of 50 Hz, so travelers may need a plug adapter depending on their devices.

Drinking water

Tap water is generally not recommended for drinking. Visitors should use bottled or properly filtered water, which is widely available in towns and resorts.

Safety

Samoa is considered very safe for travelers, with low crime rates. Petty theft is rare, but standard precautions with valuables are advised.

Body language

Handshakes are common when greeting someone. Samoans value politeness, humility, and respect for elders. Removing shoes before entering homes or traditional spaces is customary.

Business hours

Offices typically operate Monday to Friday from about 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Shops may open on Saturdays, and Sundays are generally quieter, with many businesses closed or limited.

Languages

The official languages are Samoan and English. Samoan is widely spoken in everyday life, while English is used in government, business, and tourism.
