Azerbaijan Travel Notes

Tipping

Tipping is appreciated in Azerbaijan but is not always mandatory. In restaurants, around 5–10% is common if a service charge is not included. Tips are also appreciated by hotel staff, taxi drivers, and guides.

Sockets and voltage

Azerbaijan uses plug types C and F (European standard). The standard voltage is 230 V with a frequency of 50 Hz.

Drinking water

Tap water quality varies and is generally not recommended for visitors. Bottled or filtered water should be used for drinking.

Safety

Azerbaijan is generally considered safe for travellers, especially in major cities like Baku. Petty crime is relatively uncommon, though standard precautions are advised. Travellers should avoid restricted border regions and stay informed about regional tensions.

Body language

Handshakes are common greetings. Hospitality is highly valued, and respectful behaviour toward elders and guests is important.

Business hours

Offices typically operate Monday to Friday, from around 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Shops and malls in urban areas often open daily.

Languages

The official language is Azerbaijani. Russian is also widely understood, especially in cities. English is increasingly spoken in tourism and business.
