Quesillo (Venezuelan Flan)
Indulge in the creamy, caramel-rich delight of Quesillo, a traditional Venezuelan dessert. This smooth and velvety flan offers a perfect balance of sweetness and a hint of vanilla, making it an irresistible treat for any occasion. With its delicate texture and luscious caramel topping, Quesillo is a true celebration of Latin American flavors.
Ingredients
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 can (14 oz) sweetened condensed milk
- 1 can (12 oz) evaporated milk
- 4 large eggs
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
Instructions
-
Prepare the Caramel
In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt the sugar until it becomes golden brown, stirring occasionally to prevent burning. Immediately pour the caramel into a round flan mold or individual ramekins, tilting to coat the bottom evenly. Set aside to harden.
-
Mix the Flan
In a large bowl, whisk together the sweetened condensed milk, evaporated milk, eggs, vanilla extract, and salt until smooth and well combined. Strain the mixture through a fine sieve to ensure an ultra-smooth texture.
-
Bake the Quesillo
Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Pour the flan mixture over the hardened caramel in the mold. Place the mold in a larger baking dish and add hot water to the outer dish until it reaches halfway up the sides of the flan mold (creating a water bath). Bake for 50–60 minutes, or until the flan is set but still slightly jiggly in the center.
-
Cool and Serve
Remove from the oven and let cool to room temperature. Refrigerate for at least 4 hours, preferably overnight. To serve, run a knife around the edges and invert onto a serving plate so the caramel drips over the top.
Serving
Enjoy Quesillo chilled as a dessert for family gatherings, special occasions, or whenever a sweet treat is needed. Its smooth texture and rich caramel flavor are sure to captivate anyone who tastes it.
