Plokkfiskur is a traditional Icelandic comfort dish, blending tender fish, creamy potatoes, and mild seasonings into a warm and hearty stew. Perfect for cozy family dinners, this dish captures the simple yet satisfying flavors of Icelandic home cooking.
Ingredients
- 500 g (1 lb) cooked white fish (cod, haddock, or pollock), flaked
- 4 medium potatoes, peeled and diced
- 1 medium onion, finely chopped
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1 cup milk
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)
- Rye bread or crispbread, for serving
Instructions
-
Cook the Potatoes
Place the diced potatoes in a pot of salted water and boil until tender, about 10–12 minutes. Drain and set aside.
-
Prepare the Sauce
In a large saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and cook until soft and translucent. Stir in the flour and cook for 1–2 minutes to form a roux. Gradually whisk in the milk until smooth and slightly thickened. Season with salt and pepper.
-
Combine Fish and Potatoes
Add the flaked fish and boiled potatoes to the sauce. Gently stir to combine, being careful not to break up the fish too much. Cook for 5–7 minutes until heated through. Adjust seasoning if needed.
-
Serve
Spoon the Plokkfiskur onto plates and garnish with fresh parsley. Serve with traditional Icelandic rye bread or crispbread on the side.
Serving
Plokkfiskur offers a comforting taste of Iceland, with creamy textures and delicate flavors that highlight the freshness of the fish. This humble yet satisfying stew is perfect for warming up on chilly days and sharing with family.
