Petulla
Petulla are traditional Albanian fried dough treats, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. These golden delights are perfect for breakfast, dessert, or a quick snack. Petulla can be served with powdered sugar, honey, jam, or yogurt, making them a versatile and delicious addition to any table.
Ingredients
- 2 cups (250g) all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tsp sugar
- 1/2 tsp baking powder
- 3/4 cup (180ml) warm water or milk
- 1 tbsp (15ml) vegetable oil
- 1 tsp dry yeast (optional, for extra fluffiness)
- 2 cups (500ml) vegetable oil (for frying)
Instructions
-
Prepare the Dough
In a bowl, mix flour, salt, sugar, and baking powder. If using yeast, dissolve it in warm water and let sit for 5 minutes before adding. Gradually add warm water or milk and vegetable oil, mixing until a soft dough forms.
-
Rest the Dough
Cover the dough and let it rest for 30 minutes to allow the gluten to develop.
-
Shape the Petulla
Take small pieces of dough and flatten them into round or oval shapes (about ¼ inch thick).
-
Fry Until Golden
Heat vegetable oil in a pan over medium heat. Fry each petulla until golden brown and crispy on both sides, about 2 minutes per side. Remove and place on a paper towel to drain excess oil.
Serving
Serve petulla warm, dusted with powdered sugar, drizzled with honey, or paired with yogurt and feta cheese for a savory twist.
Petulla are quick, easy, and incredibly satisfying. Whether you prefer them sweet or savory, these crispy fried dough bites will bring a taste of Albanian tradition to your table.
