Perfect for a family dinner or a special gathering, Bobotie combines sweet, savory, and aromatic spices for a truly memorable meal.

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 2 large onions, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 pound (450 g) ground beef or lamb
  • 1 slice white bread
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup raisins
  • 1/4 cup slivered almonds (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons curry powder
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric
  • 1 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1 teaspoon ground coriander
  • 2 tablespoons chutney (mild or spicy, to taste)
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 large eggs

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Meat Mixture

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add onions and garlic, and sauté until soft and translucent. Add the ground meat and cook until browned, breaking it up with a spoon. Soak the bread in milk for a few minutes, then squeeze out excess liquid and crumble it into the meat mixture. Stir in raisins, almonds (if using), curry powder, turmeric, ginger, coriander, chutney, lemon juice, salt, and pepper. Mix well and cook for another 2–3 minutes to blend the flavors.

  2. Assemble the Bobotie

Transfer the meat mixture into a greased baking dish, spreading it evenly. Beat the eggs with the remaining milk and pour over the meat mixture to create a custard topping.

  3. Bake

Bake in the preheated oven for 30–40 minutes, or until the custard is set and lightly golden on top.

  4. Serve

Serve Bobotie hot, accompanied by yellow rice, sambals, or a fresh salad. Garnish with bay leaves or chopped parsley for an authentic touch.
