Nsenene (Ugandan Fried Grasshoppers)

Ingredients

  • 2 cups fresh Nsenene (grasshoppers), cleaned
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil or peanut oil
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon salt, or to taste
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • Optional: 1 small chili, finely chopped, for heat

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Nsenene

    Rinse the grasshoppers thoroughly and remove wings and legs if desired. Pat dry with a paper towel.

  2. Sauté Aromatics

    Heat oil in a frying pan over medium heat. Add chopped onions, garlic, and chili (if using) and sauté until fragrant and golden.

  3. Fry the Nsenene

    Add the prepared grasshoppers to the pan. Fry, stirring frequently, for 5–7 minutes or until they turn golden brown and crisp. Season with salt and black pepper.

  4. Serve

    Transfer the fried Nsenene to a serving dish. Serve hot as a snack, appetizer, or alongside a traditional Ugandan meal such as matoke or posho.
