Nigeria Travel Notes

Tipping

Tipping is common in Nigeria and appreciated for good service. In restaurants and cafés, leaving around 5–10% of the bill is typical if a service charge is not included. Small tips are also given to hotel staff, drivers, and guides.

Sockets and voltage

Nigeria uses plug types D and G. The standard voltage is 230 V with a frequency of 50 Hz, so travelers may need a plug adapter.

Drinking water

Tap water is generally not safe to drink. Visitors should use bottled or properly filtered water, which is widely available.

Safety

Safety conditions can vary by region. While many urban and business areas are accessible, crime rates can be high in some locations, including theft and scams. Travelers should avoid risky areas, use trusted transport, and follow local advice.

Body language

Handshakes are common greetings and may be longer than in some cultures. Using the right hand when giving or receiving items is considered polite. Respectful greetings are important in social interactions.

Offices typically operate Monday to Friday from about 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Some businesses also open on Saturdays, while Sundays are generally quieter.
