Mauritius Travel Notes

Tipping

Tipping is appreciated but not mandatory in Mauritius. In restaurants, around 5–10% is common if a service charge is not included. Small tips are also given to hotel staff, drivers, and guides.

Sockets and voltage

Mauritius uses plug types C and G. The standard voltage is 230 V with a frequency of 50 Hz.

Drinking water

Tap water is generally safe to drink in most areas, but some travellers prefer bottled water, especially in rural locations.

Safety

Mauritius is considered a safe destination for travellers. Petty crime such as pickpocketing can occur in busy tourist areas and markets. Take standard precautions, avoid isolated areas at night, and keep valuables secure.

Body language

Handshakes are common greetings. Politeness and a friendly attitude are appreciated. It is customary to greet people before starting a conversation.

Business hours

Offices typically operate Monday to Friday, from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Shops may open on Saturdays and sometimes Sundays in tourist areas.

Languages

Mauritius has no single official language defined in law, but English is used in government and administration. French is widely spoken in media and daily life, and Mauritian Creole is the most commonly spoken language among locals.
