Tipping
Tipping is not traditionally expected but has become more common in tourist areas. In restaurants, 5–10% is appreciated if a service charge is not included. Small tips for hotel staff, drivers, and guides are also welcomed.
Sockets and voltage
Myanmar uses plug types C, D, F, and G. The standard voltage is 230 V with a frequency of 50 Hz. A universal adapter is recommended.
Drinking water
Tap water is not safe to drink. Bottled or properly filtered water should be used for drinking and brushing teeth. Avoid ice unless you are sure it is made from purified water.
Safety
Myanmar’s safety situation can be unpredictable due to political instability and regional conflicts. Travel restrictions may apply in certain areas. Visitors should monitor official advisories, avoid demonstrations, and use reputable transport and accommodation providers.
Body language
Showing the soles of your feet or pointing feet at people or religious objects is considered disrespectful. Avoid touching someone’s head, as it is seen as the most sacred part of the body. Dress modestly, especially when visiting temples.
Business hours
Typical working hours are Monday to Friday, around 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Markets and small shops may operate longer hours, including weekends.
Languages
The official language is Burmese. Ethnic minority languages are also widely spoken across the country. English is used in tourism and business but may be limited outside major cities.
