Laos Travel Notes

Tipping

Tipping is not traditionally expected in Laos but is becoming more common in tourist areas. In restaurants, around 5–10% is appreciated if a service charge is not included. Small tips for hotel staff, drivers, and guides are also welcomed.

Sockets and voltage

Laos uses plug types A, B, C, E, and F. The standard voltage is 230 V with a frequency of 50 Hz. A universal adapter is recommended.

Drinking water

Tap water is not safe to drink. Bottled or filtered water should be used for drinking and brushing teeth. Avoid ice unless you are sure it is made from purified water.

Safety

Laos is generally safe for travellers. Petty crime such as pickpocketing can occur in tourist areas, including Vientiane and Luang Prabang. Use standard precautions and avoid poorly lit areas at night.

Body language

Respectful and calm behaviour is highly valued. Avoid touching someone’s head or pointing your feet at people or religious objects. Dress modestly, especially at temples.

Business hours

Offices typically operate Monday to Friday, from around 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Shops and markets may have extended hours and are often open on weekends.

Languages

The official language is Lao. French is still used in some administrative contexts, and English is increasingly spoken in tourism and business.
