Kyrgyzstan Travel Notes

Tipping

Tipping is not mandatory but appreciated. In restaurants, around 5–10% is typical if a service charge is not included. Small tips are also common for hotel staff, drivers, and guides.

Sockets and voltage

Kyrgyzstan uses plug types C and F (European standard). The standard voltage is 220 V with a frequency of 50 Hz.

Drinking water

Tap water is generally not recommended for drinking. Bottled or filtered water should be used, especially outside major cities.

Safety

Kyrgyzstan is considered relatively safe for travellers. Petty crime such as pickpocketing can occur in busy areas, particularly in Bishkek. Standard precautions are advised, especially at night and in crowded places.

Body language

Handshakes are common greetings, especially among men. Respect for elders is important, and it is polite to greet people before starting a conversation.

Business hours

Offices typically operate Monday to Friday, from around 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Shops and markets may have extended hours and are often open on weekends.

Languages

Kyrgyzstan has two official languages: Kyrgyz and Russian. Russian is widely used in business and urban areas, while Kyrgyz is commonly spoken nationwide.
